EU consultation on Web accessibility
The EU has started a consultation on Web and e-accessibility. The EU member states are committed to improving accessibility and making all public websites accessible by 2010. This consultation is an opportunity for people with disabilities, website owners and technology providers to have their say.
Widening access through talking websites
Talklets is a Web 2.0 service that converts text based sites to voice. It works best for sites where the content is well structured. This service could improve accessibility for audiences who may not use a screen reader but would benefit from voice output such as people with dyslexia or non-native English speakers.
Free software for low vision users developed by Lighthouse
LowBrowse is an innovative program that can be tailored according to individual needs. Once users have configured their preferences in terms of font size, colour and spacing all the text on a website will be presented in the same readable format. LowBrowse will be available free as a Firefox addin later in the year.
Control your iPod through blinking
A Japanese researcher has developed a blink operated switch that can control a wide range of gadgets including TV remote controls, iPods and air conditioning. In the future it may be adapted to operate mobile phones.
Symbian is going open source
Symbian is putting its code under open source licence in order to create one open mobile software platform which will help them lead the way in mobile innovation.
Digital mapping supports disease tracking
Digital mapping of geographic data in Rwanda is helping health workers track Malaria. Layering information in digital maps is also being used to monitor other limited resources like drinking water.
