Alex Barker runs the Coventry Fun Run
We’re thrilled that Alex Barker, one of our Advice and Information Officers based in Warwick, took part in the Coventry Fun Run on Sunday 28th June 2009 and raised £270.
"This is the second time I’ve run the Coventry fun Run. Last time I managed to raise £500 and it took me 47 minutes to do. This year I want to beat my time. I have a rare condition called Moebius Syndrome which affects my hands, face and legs but cognitively I’m fine apart from apart from getting bitten by the Fun Run bug!"
You can still show Alex your support by sponsoring him online at www.justgiving.com/alexbarker.
50 Mile Brighton Bike Ride to help disabled people
AbilityNet would like to thank and to congratulate everyone who took part in or donated to the Bike Ride that took place on Saturday 26 September 2009. Not one person dropped out of the race and some even completed the course on 1 tyre (you know who you are) it was a great effort on what turned out to be a lovely day. On the day £8,138.53 including gift aid was raised, but it is not too late to donate! Simply log onto http://www.justgiving.com/RoryAndDen-BrightonBikeRide/.
Alex Barker runs the Coventry Fun Run
"Last year I decide to dust my trainers off and raise some money for two worthwhile causes. So I ran the Coventry fun run. It was 4.5 miles and I did it in 57 minutes. Not bad for a couch potato! I raised money for both AbilityNet and Farms for City Children, both charities that are dear to my heart. It wasn’t as bad as I feared it was going to be. At least I didn’t need medical help. I made sure I was rehydrated after the race too, although I’m not sure beer is the ideal way to do it! This year I’m hoping to run in the Coventry Half Marathon. My sister bet me £100 I wouldn’t do it, so I’m determined I will!"
Jackie Champion runs the Great North Run
"It’s fair to say that deciding to do the Great North Run was a good idea when it was still 9 months away. During the training however, I began to realise that perhaps this wasn’t my best idea. I‘d not run more than 3 miles before and that was mostly fast walking. On the morning the reality finally hit! Most of the run is a blur of heat, dehydration and pain. But I achieved a time of 2 hours 54 mins and 3 seconds and raised £750 for AbilityNet. The day after I could walk but only in a John Wayne style and stairs are a completely new challenge!"
Fire Walking for AbilityNet
On Friday 30th March 2007 a Fire Walk was held at the Hillsborough Sports Arena in Sheffield starting at 8pm. Over 30 people from AbilityNet and PC World took part in a ‘firewalk’.
