Professional Development for Further and Higher Education
Needs vary depending on the size of college and it’s remit. A recent project funded by South London Learning and Skills Council has shown the benefits of joined up training with staff from a range of departments. The training is modular and can be mixed and matched to make up a whole or half day. To discuss the elements that are best for you contact us.
Module 1. Disability awareness and staff attitudes (1.5 hours)
An essential introduction to ensure staff provide a proper learning environment for disabled students.
Module 2. The Disability Discrimination Act and duty to promote disability Eequality (1 hour)
Implementing the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) in Public Access Provision. All colleges should regard this as essential staff training.
Module 3. Discovering Windows accessibility (1 hour)
A presentation on the free accessibility features available in Windows and strategies that can be used to support students.
Module 4. Setting Windows profiles (1 hour)
This covers setting up Windows profiles for disabled learners and the benefits to learners and staff.
Module 5. Accessibility kit hardware (2 hours)
An introduction to the benefits of basic accessibility hardware. We bring and demonstrate this on site, so attendees to try it out if they wish.
Module 6. Accessibility kit software (max 4 hours)
An overview of assistive software for learners with dyslexia, visual impairments, physical and learning disabilities and the issues a college faces when this software is installed on their network. Content can be structured to cover the full range of disabilities or focus on particular areas in more depth.
Module 7. Technology update (1 hour)
A demonstration of the latest developments in assistive technology to help your students and an insight into how every day technology such as MP3 players and mobile phones can be used to support them.
Module 8. Capitalise on your existing assistive software ( half or full day)
Training on existing assistive software which any organisation will already have in place, such as magnification and text prediction. We will need details of your software and numbers being able to access it to prepare for this training session.
Module 9. Joined up accessibility (45 minutes - 1 hour)
Discussion on issues specific to your organisation such as needs of learners, best practice, staff training, cross departmental working and utilising the knowledge and equipment already in place.
