Parent Information and Home Assessments
Research has shown that students who use computers regularly achieve more academically. Parents certainly know that the pressure’s less when homework gets done on time, and using a computer is often a fundamental part of this (and even playing games builds useful skills!) So if your child has problems with spelling, reading from the computer or using it, there is probably a solution AbilityNet can find to help.
The best way forward is often to come to one of our Parent Information Days where you will find out about the range of equipment and be able to try it out. Information days are free, but you need to reserve a place in advance.
You should also be aware of the Computers for Pupils scheme. If you live in one of the areas identified you could be entitled to government funding for broadband access and equipment.
Home Assessments
Anyone in full time education with a disability or learning support needs should be funded for an IT assessment by their local authority, but may not be allowed to take their equipment home. If specialist adaptations have been agreed for school use, you can ask for a copy of the recommendations and we should be able to adjust these – and perhaps suggest additional educational software – for your child’s system at home.
Subject to capacity and funding we can also provide an assessment in your own home. The first step is to contact our Advice and Information service and they will discuss the next steps.
