Web accessibility
AbilityNet are experts in Web accessibility and we are interested in helping people get the most from the internet. Our work with organisations in all sectors helps improve their websites and your experience using them.
My Web My Way
In conjunction with the BBC, AbilityNet has produced a guide to help you make the most out of your computer and the internet. If you are having problems using the web, then this guide can help. It explains how to adjust your browser, computer, keyboard and mouse settings. Visit My Web My Way for more details.
Report sites with problems
When you come across a site you find difficult to use you should contact them about it. Sites usually have contact details on them, and here are some words you could use:
(Please first explain the difficulties you had)
"Having an accessible website is a legal requirement under the DDA and I would appreciate it if you could let me know what you intend to do to address these issues. If you would like some advice and assistance you may want to contact AbilityNet who offer free advice and information. Their website is www.abilitynet.org.uk"
Earn money by becoming a tester
If you have a disability you might be interested joining our team of AbilityNet testers. By looking at various websites and pieces of software and reporting how easy (or not) they were for you to use, you can plan a valuable role.
We pay our testers a pre-agreed rate for testing on receipt of their written findings. Most testing is done in your own home and in your own time, but occasionally testers in the London area are asked to come to our centre for moderated testing. If you would like to become a tester you need access to the internet and email.
To qualify you must also have some physical, sensory, cognitive or literacy difficulty that substantially impacts on your computer use. If your condition does not have a significant impact on how you use a computer then your findings will not be different from standard user testers.
If you think you would be interested in becoming a tester for us and would like to find out more, please email the AbilityNet web team: accessibility@AbilityNet.org.uk.
