Training options

We offer public courses, delivered at a variety of venues across the UK, include Computing and Leisure Activities, Computing Solutions for Dyslexia, Easing Public Access to ICT and Computing for people with Physical Disabilities.
All look at the free adjustments that can be made to existing computers as well as making the most of any free software that is useful or fun!
We also offer training for groups of staff in an organisation. Training can be delivered with staff using their own computers or AbilityNet course laptops.
You can mix and match the content from the menu below or we can organise bespoke training.

Training for public services
Training is modular and you can select the elements you wish to make up a whole or half day. To discuss the training elements that are best for you contact us
Who should attend?
This training is suitable for learning support managers & staff; computer network managers & staff; special needs managers & staff; library and learning centre managers and staff, tutors and facilitators; other professionals wishing to support their clients with computer access.
A Best practice
Module 1. Disability awareness and staff attitudes (1.5 hours)
An essential introduction to ensure staff provide a proper learning environment for disabled students.
Module 2. The Disability Discrimination Act and duty to promote disability equality (1 hour)
Implementing the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) in Public Access Provision. All colleges should regard this as essential staff training.
Module 3. Joined up accessibility (max 1 hour)
Discussion on issues specific to your organisation such as needs of learners, best practice, staff training, cross departmental working and utilising the knowledge and equipment already in place.
Module 4. Accessibility Review and Report (2.5 hours)
With a member of your staff we can look at the accessibility of your ICT provision and how aware your staff and users are of possibly untapped resources already available to you and what you may need to plan for
B Harnessing existing resources
Module 5. Discovering Windows accessibility (1 hour)
A presentation on the free accessibility features available in Windows and strategies that can be used to support clients.
Module 6. Setting Windows profiles (1 hour)
This covers setting up Windows profiles for disabled learners and the benefits to learners and staff.
C Assistive technology
Module 7. Accessibility kit hardware (max 2 hours)
An introduction to the benefits of basic accessibility hardware. We bring and demonstrate this on site, for attendees to try it out if they wish.
Module 8. Accessibility kit software (max 4 hours)
An overview of assistive software for learners with dyslexia, visual impairments, physical and learning disabilities and the issues a college faces when this software is installed on their network. Content can be structured to cover the full range of disabilities or focus on particular areas in more depth.
Module 9. Technology update ( max 1 hour)
A demonstration of the latest developments in assistive technology to help your students and an insight into how every day technology such as MP3 players and mobile phones can be used to support them.
Module 10. Capitalise on your existing assistive software ( half or full day)
Training on existing assistive software which any organisation will already have in place, such as magnification and text prediction. We will need details of your software and numbers being able to access it to prepare for this training session.
D. Addressing individual needs
Module 11. Demonstration or clinic day for staff and clients (full day).
We bring a range of the latest assistive software and hardware to your site for your staff and IT users to try and find out about
Cost
Training delivered at your location is based on a day rate plus travel expenses. For a group of 20 people this can be as little as £60 per person.
