AbilityNet present a seminar on BSF and ICT Accessibility at BETT 2009
Seminar title: BSF, ICT and SEN –innovation for all students
Speaker: John Liddle, Head of Service to Education, AbilityNet
Date/Time: 15 Jan 2009 - 10:45-11:30
Seminar Details:
The Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme heralds a huge opportunity to see some real innovation in the application of ICT to progress children's education - and this can include children with disabilities and SEN. If we get ICT accessibility right in BSF we can enrich the lives and opportunities of hundreds of thousands of children with SEN who would otherwise face barriers to learning. We could be on the threshold of a period of great change…for the better. But the potential dangers are obvious. If due diligence is not paid to the role of accessibility, then the rise of innovative technologies such as virtual learning environments will result in the gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ in the access to learning ‘stakes’ becoming ever wider. Those in greatest need could find themselves effectively victims of a technological lock-out.
Sharing our experience from work across a number of BSF programmes, this seminar will look at ways to ensure that the opportunity which BSF presents is not wasted, so that children with additional needs are brought along with everyone else. We will discuss the utopia of accessible ICT in education and how we might take steps towards this. We will highlight some key pitfalls and help you avoid them. We will talk about how everyone can be included, without hindering innovation.
